Spring cleaning for your smile

Posted

We are in the season of renewal. As we continue spring cleaning our homes and refreshing our yards, it’s the perfect time to revitalize our smiles. Teeth whitening is one of the simplest cosmetic improvements available, and it’s a great way to refresh your look for special events and the months ahead.

Before choosing a treatment, it is helpful to understand the two types of discoloration. Extrinsic stains are surface-level, typically caused by coffee, wine or tobacco. Intrinsic stains occur deep within the tooth structure, often resulting from aging, trauma, or certain medications. While extrinsic stains are easier to lift, modern technology allows us to make significant improvements even on lifelong intrinsic discoloration.

When exploring options, consider that Over-the-Counter (OTC) strips and toothpastes are accessible and budget friendly.  Because they aren't custom-fitted, however, results can be uneven and take weeks to appear. Custom trays filled with professional-grade gel (the standard in our office just several years ago) remain a reliable option, though they require a daily time commitment over several weeks.

For those seeking immediate results, in-office whitening is the gold standard. These treatments use high-concentration peroxide gels to lighten teeth by up to eight shades in just 60 to 90 minutes. In our practice, we utilize the GLO Science Professional Whitening system, which combines light and heat technology for faster, more even results with minimal sensitivity. Most importantly, the patient receives an at-home kit to continue the whitening process and maintain his brilliant new smile long after he leaves the chair.

A bright smile is a powerful accessory. This spring, as you spruce up your surroundings, consider giving yourself a refreshed, confident start. This “gift” to yourself might seem like a splurge, but it is one worth taking!
