The Philadelphia Flyers finally have something to celebrate. After a historically disappointing start to the 2026-27 season, Philadelphia snapped its nine-game winless streak with a 3-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night at Xfinity Mobile Arena.
The Flyers entered the matchup with an 0-6-3 record, marking the worst start in franchise history, but a strong performance from their young talent and goaltender Dan Vladar helped Philadelphia secure its first win.
For the first time this season, the Flyers showed signs of the offensive urgency and consistency that had been missing throughout their opening nine games.
Philadelphia outshot Ottawa 14-8 in the first period, a significant improvement for a team that has struggled to generate quality scoring opportunities. Despite the stronger start, the Senators struck first when Drake Batherson capitalized on a feed from former Flyers captain Claude Giroux in the second period.
However, Philadelphia responded rather than allowing another game to slip away. Porter Martone tied the contest after redirecting a beautiful setup from Matvei Michkov, giving the Flyers some much-needed momentum. Later in the second period, the two young forwards connected again, this time with Michkov burying a power-play rebound off Martone's shot to give Philadelphia a 2-1 lead. Trevor Zegras eventually sealed the victory with an empty-net goal in the final seconds.
The chemistry between Michkov and Martone was one of the biggest positives of the night. Both forwards finished with a goal and an assist, providing a glimpse of what could become an important offensive combination for Philadelphia's future. Following the victory, Michkov was extremely complimentary of Martone, emphasizing that he supports the young forward both on and off the ice. Their growing connection is encouraging for a Flyers organization desperately searching for offensive production and an identity.
Meanwhile, Vladar delivered another strong performance between the pipes, stopping 25 of 26 shots and helping Philadelphia protect its one-goal advantage throughout the third period. When I asked Vladar what the first victory meant to him and the team, his attention immediately shifted toward maintaining the same preparation heading into Monday's matchup.
"We know who we got coming on Monday, so good sleep tonight, and, you know, tomorrow, if you have practice, you know, have a great practice, and, you know, do the same preparation like we've been doing lately before every game, just to put ourselves in the best spot for the next one," Vladar said.
Saturday's victory does not erase the frustration surrounding this team, but it provides a much-needed starting point. With Michkov and Martone beginning to establish chemistry and Vladar continuing to provide stability in net, Philadelphia finally has something positive to build on. The biggest question now is whether the Flyers can turn one encouraging performance into consistent results rather than allowing their first win to become an isolated bright spot in an otherwise disappointing season.
