Learn how to extend your garden’s growing season

Posted

Want to get more out of your vegetable garden each year?

Join gardener Russ Hartman during the Trevose Horticultural Society's monthly meeting on Oct. 20 to learn how.

'Season Extenders and Crop Protection' will be the featured topic of the meeting, slated for Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Bensalem Senior Center, 1850 Byberry Rd. in Bensalem.

Hartman will discuss practical, affordable tools and techniques for starting crops earlier in spring and harvesting later into fall — while protecting plants from frost, wind, pests, and unpredictable weather.

Topics will include how to read frost dates to plan your season, cool-season crop selection and a survey of season-extension options ranging from simple frost blankets and cloches to cold frames, low tunnels, and plastic mulches.

Whether you're a beginner looking to protect a few seedlings or an experienced gardener ready to build a low tunnel, you'll come away with concrete strategies and resources to put to work in your own garden.

Trevose Horticultural Society meetings are open to the public. All are welcome, and cost is $5 to observe.  For information, call 856-866-9163 or visit trevosegardeners.org
