MLS returned from its almost two-month World Cup break with a bang this past Wednesday, featuring all 30 teams! 39 goals, only one scoreless draw, and multi-goal thrillers headlined the midweek matchday. Here's a snapshot of Major League Soccer's latest matchday.
The 7:30 pm window of matches had five of the 30 matchups and produced interesting results. Columbus hosted NYCFC, and the visitors took advantage of their chances better than the hosts en route to a 2-1 win. Cincinnati and Vancouver met in a thrilling 4-3 win for FCC, with all seven goals coming before the 70th minute!
Reigning champion Inter Miami spoiled Robert Lewandowski's debut, beating Chicago 3-2. The lone scoreless draw of the night was between Eastern Conference foes New England and Toronto. Last-place Philly Union got a new manager bump in their return to play, beating Red Bull New York 3-1.
There were four matches in the 8:30/9:30 pm window. Houston and DC battled to a 1-1 draw as stars Héctor Herrera and Tai Baribo both scored. League leaders Nashville got their 13th clean sheet in a 1-0 win over Montreal. Kansas City beat Minnesota 2-1 in a Midwest showdown. Austin got a return-to-play victory over Seattle Sounders, who have now lost four in a row dating back to May 16th.
Five matches were showcased in the late-night window of games. Colorado Rapids took all three points over San Diego FC thanks to a 90+6-minute winner! St Louis scored twice before halftime and then added an exclamation-point goal after an LA Galaxy red card to win 3-1. LAFC's stars Son and Bouanga both scored in a counterattacking masterclass of a 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake.
