It is hard to grasp all the changes that have occurred in the field of dentistry since opening my office in January 1984. There was not a computer in sight (we did have a typewriter!) and every administrative procedure was done by hand. We had paper charts that got thicker and thicker and more cumbersome through the years and a “dark room” to develop x-rays. The waiting room had lots of magazines and they were good, and current ones.
Today’s office is so different. Computers populate every room and handle so much technical and administrative work. Digital x-rays provide immediate imaging while emitting much less radiation (up to 90% less), no dark room needed. Smart phones decreased the importance of magazines, and Covid basically killed them!
We still have some paper charts, but only because the “old doc” can’t let them go! My son and the rest of the team are totally “paperless” and soon the paper charts will go by the wayside.
Dental technology has exploded in the last half a century. Missing teeth can be permanently replaced with implants, and patients who face multiple extractions have choices beyond removable dentures.
Remember silver fillings? While occasionally we will place amalgams for specific reasons, almost all restorations are done with superior composite white materials. Lasers now decrease much of the noise and discomfort of drilling and are used to perform minimally invasive dental surgeries.
In early 1984, I did not wear face masks, eye coverings or disposable gloves, all of which are essential for keeping the dental team safe. Several decades ago, I began wearing a light affixed to my forehead and magnifiers (called “loops”) to allow me to see better into the mouth and provide the best dentistry possible.
There’s not enough space to elaborate more (veneers, gingival sculpting, CAD/CAM, etc) but I assure you it’s a good time to be a dental patient. The technology is amazing and the finished smiles are brilliant.
It’s the reason I loved going to work for 42 years!
