The Philadelphia Phillies wasted a gem from ace Cristopher Sanchez in a 2-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays in the series opener for the final regular-season matchup on the schedule. The Phillies offense failed to show up in a big-time contest, generating only four hits in their 12th shutout loss of the 2026 campaign.
With the defeat, the Phillies fall to an 87-73 record and are relegated to seeing how the Arizona Diamondbacks fare against a (likely hungover) squad from San Diego still trying to rinse the champagne off their gear after clinching a Wild Card spot on September 24.
After retiring the first two hitters he faced, Sanchez allowed three consecutive singles in the first inning to allow Tampa Bay to secure an early 1-0 lead. Nearly two and a half hours later, it was all the top team in the American League to secure a 97th victory on the season.
The Rays doubled their lead to 2-0 in the second inning on a solo home run from Nick Fortes, his sixth round-tripper of the season. Sanchez would lock in after that home run, allowing only one additional hit through the next five innings.
With the Phillies offense nonexistent on the evening, Sanchez picked up his seventh loss of the season despite a fairly solid stat line: five hits allowed, two earned runs, one walk and 10 strikeouts. Despite the loss, Sanchez’s earned run average fell from 2.93 to 2.91 to (likely) finish out his regular season.
No Phillies player secured more than one hit on the evening, which isn’t exactly a stunner given Philadelphia’s limited hit count. Kyle Schwarber, Alec Bohm, and Alec Bohm went hitless near the top of the lineup, while the bottom-of-the-lineup hitters Justin Crawford, J.T. Realmuto, and Edmundo Sosa) combined for a 1-9 performance on Friday night. The Phillies starting catcher (Realmuto) is currently mired in an 0-for-31 slump heading into the final two contests of the 2026 schedule.
Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, Bryson Stott, and Crawford secured the hits for the Phillies. Philadelphia only threatened to score once in the game, a sixth-inning situation where Stott and Harper were left stranded at third and second base, respectively.
Tampa Bay used four relievers out of the bullpen, all of whom denied Phillies hitters over the final 3 ⅔ innings of the ballgame. Bryan Baker locked the game down in the ninth inning to secure his 41st save of the season, tying Cleveland’s Cade Smith for the most in the Majors this season.
Despite the loss on Friday night, the Phillies still have an opportunity to win a pair of ballgames this weekend to secure a postseason appearance. However, they’ve now allowed the Diamondbacks to believe there is a bit of playoff hope at the end of the tunnel this weekend.
With some rainy weather currently moving into the Northeast, the Phillies might have to battle Mother Nature AND Tampa Bay to clinch a postseason bid in 2026.
Tomorrow night’s game is currently scheduled for a 7:15 pm ET first pitch, while Sunday afternoon’s contest is slated for 3:05 pm ET. It’s just about win-or-go-home time for the Phillies. Can they show up tomorrow night when it matters the most?
