Phillies secure water-logged win in Baltimore

In a rainy afternoon, the Phillies ended their drought.

The Phillies offense roared to life in an 8-0 shutout victory over the Baltimore Orioles on a damp day at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland. Zack Wheeler saw only two innings of action in his 18th start of the 2026 season before a 1-hour and 49-minute rain delay ended his Sunday afternoon.

Philadelphia's bats ensured their starter's early innings were not wasted against Baltimore, with the win securing the team's first series victory following the 2026 All-Star Break.

Wheeler wins after

Philly opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning after walks to Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner put a runner in scoring position. Turner was picked off and caught stealing second base, leaving just the Phillies slugger standing on a white rectangle. Bryan De La Cruz allowed Schwarber to saunter home following a 400-foot home run to center field for a 2-0 road lead.

The rains intensified, causing the nearly two-hour delay as both Wheeler and Kyle Bradish watched the water wash away the remainder of their start. The infield dirt was reminiscent of Game 5 of the 2008 World Series as World Series dreams danced in Phillies fans' heads in late October. Could that be a smaller omen for events to come later this fall?

Phillies pull away after delay

In the third inning, Orioles reliever Anthony Nunez allowed all four of the first batters he faced to reach base, including a bases-loaded walk to Bryson Stott to provide a 3-0 Phillies advantage. Justin Crawford grounded into the fielder’s choice to take on another run and increase the advantage to 4-0.

Bryce Harper blasted a 419-foot longball to right-center field to give the Phillies a 5-0 lead in the fifth frame. Reliever Tim Mayza provided interim manager Don Mattingly with a desperately needed three strong innings out of the bullpen to push the game into the sixth inning and official game status.

As the water continued to pour from the sky, the Phillies put together several strong plate appearances from J.T. Realmuto, Stott, Crawford, Turner, and Schwarber to add two more runs on a sloppy brown infield to run the score to 8-0.

Before Orion Kerkering could battle Pete Alonso to open the bottom of the sixth, the grounds crew at Oriole Park rushed onto the playing surface to pull the tarp across the field for the second rain delay of the evening. There would be no return to play as the Phillies tweeted out a “Phils Win” graphic on social media shortly thereafter.

Dombrowski on the Clock?

With the game official after five innings, the Phillies improve their record to 58-53 with the 8-0 win while the Orioles fall to 54-57. All eyes now turn to general manager Dave Dombrowski to see if the veteran front-office member chooses to play "Let's Make A Deal" and add talent to his clubhouse ahead of tomorrow night’s 6 pm trade deadline.

(G)Nats invade South Philly for 4 Games

Citizens Bank Park is about to be invaded by a swarm of Washington Nationals who arrive for a four-game series in South Philadelphia between Aug. 3-Aug 6.

Washington traded away the National League leader in slugging percentage at the trade deadline by trading Luis Garcia Jr. to the New York Yankees. Talented southpaw Foster Griffin is reportedly a topic of trade discussions ahead of Monday’s transaction deadline.

By the time the opening pitch is tossed on Monday night, Phillies fans will have a better understanding of how the Phillies roster will be constructed heading towards the 2026 Playoffs.

Whether those supporters will actually be happy with the activity (or inactivity) is another story entirely.
