Matthew’s story: Finding connection and joy in memory care

Posted

The Birches at New Hope welcomed its first memory care residents during the preopening phase last October. Since then, families have witnessed their loved ones thrive within a structured, supportive community defined by attentive care and purposeful daily connection.

For residents like Matthew Martin, the right care setting has helped him become more present and engaged.

“Matthew was a highly respected and successful executive, and is a loving husband and dad,” said Jody, Matthew’s wife. “His dementia has been difficult for our family in many ways. The Birches has provided us with dignified and personalized care, enabling us to participate meaningfully in his life, but also providing independence and bringing a level of comfort.”

Before moving in, symptoms of dementia affected his safety and well-being. Constant pacing, wandering, and restlessness disrupted his care routines at home, underscoring the need for ongoing support.

Daybreak at The Birches provides a highly structured environment that allows Matthew to engage in purposeful tasks reflective of his professional lifestyle, while valuing the skills and abilities that remain. With the team's attentiveness, he has become more outgoing and is affectionately called “the mayor” for his friendly, sociable nature.

Matthew’s progress is evident in moments like a recent group outing in which Matthew remained content and engaged throughout a 45-minute opera performance. This milestone highlights the impact of structured routines, individualized care, and purposeful engagement on his quality of life.

Memory Care Director Lauren Tritschler said, “Matthew’s smile is infectious. He thrives on structure. Since joining our Daybreak neighborhood, he looks forward to participating in activities and trips, and his family has the peace of mind that he is well cared for.”
