Thanks to second-half goals from Danley Jean-Jacques and 16-year-old Cavan Sullivan, the Philadelphia Union have extended their unbeaten streak to eight games after defeating CF Montreal by a score of 2-0 at Subaru Park Saturday night.
“I didn’t think it was our best performance as a team, but when things aren't coming off exactly as planned, you have to find an ugly way of winning.” - Interim Head Coach Ryan Richter
The visitors thought they made themselves right at home with a goal in the opening minutes of the game to give themselves an early lead at Subaru Park, but the strike by Prince Owusu was taken back due to an offside call the referee confirmed on the monitor following Montreal’s celebrations of the goal.
Bruno Damiani got an opportunity to put Union ahead in the 12th minute after Cavan Sullivan’s left-footed shot on net produced a dangerous rebound in the middle of the box, but Montreal’s keeper Sébastian Breza put enough pressure on Damiani to make up for his initial mistake and force the ball wide of the net.
In the 40th minute, a creative set-piece from the Union gave Kai Wagner an opportunity to let a left-footed blast fly from just outside the box, but his attempt on net skirted just wide of the post to Breza’s left.
A nice ball into the middle from Frankie Westfield put Bruno Damiani inside the box in the 43rd minute of the match. With the ball at his feet, Damiani's attempt on net once again sailed wide of the post to keep the game scoreless heading into the halftime break.
Just on the other side of halftime, Milan Iloski put Sébastian Breza to the test early with a header from close range, but Breza kept the ball out with the wave of his right glove.
In the 57th minute of the match, it was Danley Jean-Jacques who broke the deadlock at Subaru Park after a free kick from Kai Wagner bounced around Montreal’s box and eventually found Jean-Jacques on the doorstep. Jean-Jacques blasted the ball into the back of the net to give Union a 1-0 lead early in the 2nd half, his 3rd goal of the 2026 MLS season.
Just over 10 minutes later, Montreal had an opportunity to level the game at Subaru Park after a soft penalty was called on Neil Pierre in the top corner of Union’s box, but Prince Owusu’s stutter-step attempt to beat the Union keeper was denied by Andre Blake, who stood steady on his line to keep Union in front.
“Sometimes you need a little luck, and you need Andre Blake to stand tall, and he did in a few moments.” - Ryan Richter
In the 75th minute of the match, it was 16-year-old Cavan Sullivan who scored for the 3rd consecutive game to double the lead for the Union at home. After a save from Breza on a breakaway opportunity left his net unattended, Cavan Sullivan ran onto the loose ball and blasted it into the back of the net to give Union a commanding 2-0 lead at home. The goal was Sullivan’s 4th of the year, and his 3rd in as many games.
The 2-0 win at home bumps Union’s unbeaten streak under Ryan Richter to 8 games in league play, moving the Blue and Gold’s record to 7 Wins, 6 Draws, and 10 Losses for a total of 27 points.
Depending on results from around the league, Ryan Richter’s Philadelphia Union could very well end the weekend above the playoff line after coming out of the World Cup break 11 points back of the final spot in the Eastern Conference.
It’ll be a quick turnaround for the Blue and Gold, who host FC Cincinnati at Subaru Park on Wednesday night.
“We’re going to keep trying to improve as a team and not stay satisfied.” - Ryan Richter
