World Cup 2026 Day 15: Group E Recap

Group E's final day had drama and history as three teams qualified for the knockout rounds!

Posted

Day 15 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup brought us action from Group E in the final round of Group Stage matches. Germany came into Thursday’s fixture with their ticket to the knockout stage already punched, but the other teams in the group, especially Ecuador and Curaçao, needed a result in order to keep their World Cup dreams alive.

World Cup Group E - Matchday 3

Côte d’Ivoire 2 - 0  Curaçao

In South Philadelphia, Les Éléphants of Côte d’Ivoire returned to Philadelphia Stadium for their 2nd match of the World Cup group stage, facing off against the Blue Wave of Curaçao, the smallest nation to ever qualify for the tournament.

Curaçao, a small Caribbean island with a population of around 150,000 people, showed up to their first ever World Cup in numbers, flooding the streets of Philadelphia on their march to the stadium and hopeful of getting the result they needed in order to advance to the Knockouts after a 15-save clean sheet by Eloy Room against Ecuador kept their hopes alive.

But on the pitch, it was all Les Éléphants. Just 7 minutes into the match, Nicolas Pépé gave Côte d’Ivoire an early 1-0 lead after 19-year-old Yan Diomandé created some chaos along the goal line, picked up the ball inside Curaçao’s penalty area, and delivered a perfect pass to Nicolas Pépé for a tap-in, his first goal of the tournament.

Pépé wasn’t done putting his touch on this game, because in the 64th minute, after receiving a through-ball from Ibrahim Sangarè, which split two Curaçao defenders, Pèpè fired a left-footed shot into the far corner of the net for his 2nd goal of the night, giving Côte d’Ivoire a 2-0 lead.

After the match, supporters of Les Éléphants could be seen on the concourse of Philadelphia Stadium celebrating their achievement of advancing to the World Cup Knockout stage for the first time in Côte d’Ivoire’s history.

Ecuador 2 - 1  Germany

Though Germany's place in the Knockout stage was already confirmed coming into Thursday’s match, Ecuador knew they needed a win and a Curaçao loss in order to keep their hopes alive.

A bad start to the World Cup looked to be getting worse for the Ecuadorians, after Germany’s Leroy Sané found the back of the net just 2 minutes into the match.  A throw-in to Ecuador keeper Hernán Galindez’s left caused chaos in the box after a high-boot from a German player looked to strike someone in yellow. The ref let play continue, and Florian Wirtz slid the ball over to Sané inside the top of the box, who hit the back of the net with the first touch of his left foot to give Germany an early 1-0 lead.

But Ecuador responded right away, equalizing just 7 minutes later thanks to Nilson Angulo.  A bad touch from Germany’s Felix Nmecha in the midfield put Ecuador on the attack with numbers going forward.  Angulo carried the ball towards goal, got to the top of the box, and bounced one into the corner of the net with his right foot to bring the game level at 1 inside the first 10 minutes.

The match remained level until the latter stages of the 2nd half, when, in the 77th minute, Gonzalo Plata found the back of the net to give Ecuador a 2-1 lead. A corner was sent towards the near post from German keeper Manuel Neuer’s left, and was headed into the middle box by Kevin Rodríguez.  The header from Rodríguez fell right on the doorstep of the German’s goal, and before Neuer could react and punch the ball away, it was Gonzalo Plata who reached up in the air with his left foot and stuck the ball under the crossbar and into the top of the net to break the deadlock and restore Ecuador’s hopes of reaching the knockout round.

Ecuador would go on to win the game, with many players collapsing to the pitch after the final whistle in relief that they’ve secured their spot in the Round of 32.
