Day 4 of the 2026 World Cup brought us action from Group E with matchups of Germany vs Curaçao and Ecuador vs Côte d'Ivoire, the first of 6 matches played here in Philadelphia during the tournament this Summer.
Germany, four-time World Cup winners, came into their first match of the 2026 World Cup as heavy favorites. Lined up across from them during the national anthems was Curaçao, the smallest nation ever to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, making its debut in the tournament this Summer.
Germany got on the board early thanks to Felix Nmecha, who ran onto a ball laid off by Florian Wirtz at the top of the box, which he fired into the corner of the net to the Curaçao keeper's left in the 6th minute of the match.
In the 21st minute, a moment the small island-nation of Curaçao will never forget. A blocked shot inside the penalty area sat for Livano Comenencia, who ran onto the loose ball and, with his first touch, placed a left-footed shot into the back of the net, giving Curaçao its first goal ever at the FIFA World Cup and sending fans back home into a celebration their country has never seen before.
The party for Curaçao was short-lived, though, as Germany re-gained their lead with a Nico Schlotterbeck header in the 38th minute, and doubled their advantage heading into the half-time break with a Kai Havertz penalty just before the final whistle of the first half.
Curaçao did well to hang with Germany in the first 45, and even got their moment of glory with Comenencia's historic goal, but the 2nd half was all the Germans'. Not even 2 minutes into the 2nd frame, Jamal Musiala made it 4-1.
In the 68th minute Nathaniel Brown, already with an assist on the day, got himself on the scoresheet after receiving a fancy back-heeled pass in the box to make it 5-1. 10 minutes later Deniz Undav scored Germany's 6th of the day, with Kai Havertz adding a 7th in the 88th minute with a chip over the keeper, capping off a perfect start to the tournament for the Germans.
Later in the day was a high-quality matchup between Ecuador and Côte d'Ivoire, the first of six matches played in Philadelphia during the World Cup. Ecuador fans showed up in Philadelphia the night before, gathering in a massive crowd at Philadelphia's famous Rocky Steps, which they may now regret - more on that later.
All of South Philadelphia was covered in yellow Sunday night, with Ecuador fans showing up at the stadium in large numbers and early. La Tri supporters met at Stateside Live! next to the stadium, where they enjoyed a pre-match rally to get everyone in World Cup spirit.
After the rally, Ecuador fans met and marched into the stadium, singing and dancing together for almost 30 minutes before dispersing and heading through the entry gates. Drums, trumpets, flags, smoke bombs, traditional costumes, and people of all ages coming together to display the passion they share for their National team.
Philadelphia Stadium was almost completely full, with an announced attendance of 68,274 (a tournament capacity of 68,324), the majority of whom were wearing yellow for Ecuador. You could really sense the disparity during the playing of Ecuador's national anthem, "Salve, Oh Patria".
Amongst all that yellow and right behind the Côte d'Ivoire bench was a small pocket of Orange, ready to cheer on Les Éléphants at the World Cup for the first time since 2014.
Ecuador came the closest to breaking the deadlock on multiple occasions, though both teams hit the crossbar on the night. Ecuador's John Yeboah hit a left-footed shot that cemented Côte d'Ivoire's keeper in place, but Yahia Fofana's prayers were answered by the frame of his goal, keeping things scoreless. In the 30th minute, Pedro Vite played a nice through-ball that put Alan Minda in on net with a chance to give Ecuador the lead, but his shot also rang the crossbar.
In the 52nd minute, Côte d'Ivoire's 19-year-old Yan Diomande played an inviting ball into the box for Elye Wahi. Wahi put the ball on the net with his first touch, but this time the crossbar came to Ecuador keeper Hernán Galindez's rescue.
The game looked like it was heading for a scoreless draw, but in the 90th minute, Yan Diomande, who had been forcing issues for Ecuador's defense all night long, bolted down the right side of the pitch and played a pass into the middle of the box for Amad Diallo. Diallo let the ball run across his body and used his left to fire it on net with his first touch, pushing the ball to the far post and placing it into the back of the net for a late 1-0 Côte d'Ivoire lead.
And amidst all that yellow, the small pocket of Côte d'Ivoire fans were able to celebrate their team taking the lead in front of a stadium full of Ecuador fans.
Les Éléphants would hold on to their 1-0 advantage and secure all 3 points in a World Cup match for the first time since 2014, breaking Ecuador's 19-game streak without a loss. Ecuador is the first team in World Cup history to hit the goal-post 3 times and still lose a match.
Until the Perpetual downpour that came after the final whistle, it was a perfect night for the first of 6 matches during the 2026 World Cup in South Philadelphia. The atmosphere and feeling at Philadelphia Stadium are best captured in this video of two fans swapping jerseys after the match. This is what the World Cup is really all about: passionate supporters from all over the world coming together for the beautiful game.
Germany and the Ivory Coast both took three points on matchday one to top Group E. However, Germany is sitting pretty with a +6 goal differential that could be the difference between finishing in first or second. Ecuador and Curacao have their work cut out for them as they head into matchday two next Saturday.
