In light of today's news that the Eagles could be without Dallas Goedert for multiple weeks due to an MCL injury, Philadelphia moved fast to bring back a familiar face to their offense.
According to Adam Schefter, Eagles legend Zach Ertz is coming home, signing with the team that drafted him and that he would go on to win a Super Bowl with. Initially, he'll join the practice squad, but the assumption is he'll be the one to tide the TE position over until Goedert returns.
Ertz was linked with the Birds earlier this offseason after rookie TE Eli Stowers looked to be developing slower than intended over the Summer. With Grant Calcaterra joining Stowers on IR, the Eagles were left with minimal options on the depth chart to replace the recently injured Goedert.
Zach Ertz will look to pick up where he left off with the Eagles in 2021. His emotional departure led him to Arizona and later Washington, where he spent both of the last two seasons, picking up 1,158 yards and 11 touchdowns over that span. Although he's now 35 years old and coming off of a torn ACL, it's clear he's still got some gas in the tank and a chance to go out on his terms wearing the jersey of the team he loves in a City he called home for 9 years was likely too good to pass up.
To this day, Ertz still ranks second in franchise history in receptions, and first over a single season. That same historic campaign in 2018 still stands as the NFL's all-time record for receptions in a single season (116) set back in 2018.
The reception he'll get running out of the tunnel at Lincoln Financial Field is bound to give fans everywhere goosebumps. Whether or not he remains in the rotation once Goedert returns is anyone's guess, but for now, Zach Ertz is coming home, and the Eagles fill a big void with a player who once made that spot his own.
