American Legion's 'Salute to the Fallen' carries family legacy in Langhorne

Posted

A Memorial Day tradition took on special meaning this year when an active-duty Coast Guardsman joined veterans from the American Legion of Langhorne's Jesse W. Soby Post 148 in honoring fallen service members.

Each year, members of the post conduct the "Salute to the Fallen," a solemn Memorial Day observance held at 11 cemeteries and memorial sites throughout the area.

During this year's ceremony at Our Lady of Grace Cemetery, Petty Officer 3rd Class Nicholas Brandt, who is stationed in Venice, Louisiana, participated as a special member of the honor guard. Brandt presented flowers on behalf of the American Legion at the grave of his great-grandfather, James Brandt.

James Brandt served in the U.S. Army during World War I and in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He also served as a past commander of Jesse W. Soby Post 148.

Joining Nicholas Brandt at the ceremony was his cousin, Steve Zalot, commander of the Sons of the American Legion. Don Minnick, commander of Jesse W. Soby Post 148, also participated in the observance.

The annual Salute to the Fallen ceremony honors veterans who served the nation and ensures their sacrifices are remembered by future generations.
