After missing his most recent start, the Philadelphia Phillies have placed starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo on the Injured List, according to The Athletic's Matt Gelb.
Luzardo is 14-5 with a 2.87 earned run average this season for the Phillies. He has made 29 starts and accumulated 221 strikeouts in 178.2 innings pitched. He was nominated to the All-Star team this summer for the first time in his career.

The left-hander had not made a start since September 7th, when he tossed a complete game shutout against the Atlanta Braves. Luzardo threw 109 pitches in that outing, which tied for the second most this season. He also threw 109 pitches on August 15th against the Minnesota Twins. The most pitches the Phillies' lefty has thrown in a game this year was 110, on his August 21st start against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Luzardo can be reactivated to the Phillies roster on the final day of the regular season, giving him the potential to have one more outing before the postseason. If the Phillies do qualify for the playoffs, which they seemingly should, Luzardo is still an option according to manager Don Mattingly.
Without Luzardo, the Phillies' pitching depth takes a severe hit, and so do their chances to advance to the NLDS.
In place of Luzardo will be Grant Holman, who was recalled from Triple-A to join the Phillies roster. Holman was initially selected by the Phillies as the 28th man when the rosters expanded but then was sent back to the minor leagues after left-handed reliever Tanner Banks returned from the injury list.
Holman is 3-0 with a 3.66 earned run average in 32 innings pitched in the minor leagues this season. In his lone outing for the Phillies, he only managed one out, allowing five unearned runs to score.
