Schwarber hits historic 30th home run in Phillies win over Mets

Posted
The Phillies battled back from a high-traffic day for the pitching staff to win 5-4 against the New York Mets on Sunday. Phillies pitchers allowed nine hits and eight walks against the Mets, but managed to avoid most of the damage, keeping the Mets to only four runs. Kyle Backhus received the win, pitching 0.2 innings of one-hit baseball.

Offensively, Kyle Schwarber was the hero for the Sunday matinee, hitting his 30th home run of the season to give the Phillies a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh. Schwarber is now the fastest player in a Phillies uniform to reach 30 home runs in a season.

Three runs in the third

When the lineup flipped over for a second time through, the offense made its move. With one out in the top of the third, Trea Turner and Kyle Schwarber hit back-to-back singles into right field. The pair then executed a double steal before a sacrifice fly from Bryce Harper scored Turner to put the Phillies on the board.

Alec Bohm, who had gone hitless in his previous two games and was given the day off Saturday, then slung his second of the day, a double, to score Schwarber. Brandon Marsh finished the job on the inning, scoring Bohm on a single into right field, giving the Phillies a 3-0 lead.

Luzardo throwing and dancing with fire

Jesús Luzardo has continued to demonstrate that he has explosive stuff in his pitching arsenal. Topping at 98.7 mph on the day, Luzardo struck out six batters through five innings of work. Where the issue has lied for Luzardo is, that once the opposing team starts hitting against him, his explosive pitches can have a tendency to blow up in his face.

Through the first three innings, Luzardo navigated it well, only allowing one baserunner on a single in the third. The fourth inning came and Luzardo found himself in danger. A Juan Soto walk and Bo Bichette single put two baserunners on early for the Miami-native. After a mound visit from Caleb Cotham, however, Luzardo locked in, striking out the side to get out of the jam.

A lead-off single and a follow-up walk from Tyrone Taylor and Brett Baty put Luzardo back in the same situation in the bottom of the fifth. Forcing Luis Torrens into a groundout for the first out of the inning, Luzardo then allowed Taylor to score on a Carson Benge single into left field. With Soto at the plate, Luzardo only gave him one pitch in the strike zone, eventually settling for a walk to load the bases.

Cotham then walked out to give Luzardo a minute to catch his breath. Luzardo then finished the fifth, and his outing, on a strong note by striking out Bichette and getting Eric Wagaman out on a line-out to end the inning.

To the bullpen

Luzardo passed the ball off to Chase Shugart in line for his seventh win of the 2026 season. He would have to settle for a no decision instead.

Francisco Alvarez doubled on the second pitch from Shugart, putting pressure on the relief pitcher early in the bottom of the sixth. Shugart was able to get a strikeout on pinch-hitter Jared Young before allowing a game-tying two-run home run to A.J. Ewing.

With a clean slate on the basepath, the hope was that Shugart would settle in and get out of the inning. In reality, he allowed the next two batters to reach on a walk and single before being removed from the game in favor of Kyle Backhus.

With runners on the corners, Benge hits a line drive over Backhus’ head. The trajectory of the ball would have placed it as a one-hopper to Turner, who would have been in perfect position to roll a double play to end the inning. Instead, Backhus reached up to make the catch, watching as the ball deflected off his glove towards Bohm at third base. Bohm was able to get the out at first on the play, but the run scored, giving the Mets a 4-3 lead. Shugarts was charged with all three runs on 0.1 innings of work.

Fastest from zero to 30

Down for the first time on the day, the Phillies sought to tie the game up in the top of the seventh. Justin Crawford reached base on a single into left field. The speedy outfielder wouldn’t need to use his speed to score, however, as Kyle Schwarber batted him in on a two-run shot into center field, giving the Phillies a 5-4 lead.

The home run was Schwarber’s 30th of the season, just 84 games into the year. Schwarber now holds the franchise record for the fastest 30 home run season in Phillies history. He also owns a five home run lead over Yordan Alvarez, Byron Buxton, and Hunter Goodman for the most home runs in Major League Baseball this season.

We built this Citi

Up by one run, the Phillies needed nine outs to record their fourth-straight series win, all against National League East rivals. José Alvarado and Orion Kerkering kept the Mets scoreless but not without difficulty as the pair allowed a combined five base runners.

Jhoan Duran entered in the ninth looking to secure his 21st save of the season. Allowing one baserunner on a walk to Baty, but he kept the Mets scoreless to close it out in the ninth.

With the win, the Phillies took the series 2-1 in New York, improving to 4-2 on the season against the Mets. The team will return home after a successful week away, going 5-2 against the Nationals and Mets.

The Battle of Pennsylvania

The Phillies will now return home to host the Pittsburgh Pirates for a four-game Independence Week matchup. First pitch for game one will be at 6:40 p.m. Monday night and will feature a matchup of Aaron Nola versus Braxton Ashcraft.
