The art of Alan Fetterman: “A Kaleidoscope Within”

Posted

For over 30 years and scores of solo exhibitions, I have embraced the exhilarating, unpredictable journey of a full-time artist. The vibrant energy, deep history and raw beauty of the natural world are the wellsprings of my creativity. Whether through painting, sculpture, poetry or music, every piece I create is essentially born from a profound connection to Bucks County—our shared homeland.

This latest exhibition, “Bucks County, A Kaleidoscope Within,” serves as a powerful metaphor for constant change, shifting perspectives and the beauty found in life’s unpredictable patterns.

While I began as a strict plein air painter, managing Type 1 diabetes for the last 20 years has transitioned my creative efforts primarily into the studio. Driven by intense curiosity and a background in philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania, incorporated with vast travel in the Americas and abroad, my work is built on deep intention and a heartfelt zest for discovery. I do not paint by formula; each piece represents a distinct, sincere personal journey.

My early self-study was anchored by Ralph Mayer's definitive 1940 book, “The Artist's Handbook of Materials and Techniques.” Furthermore, my time as a civil engineer in the United States Air Force, operating machinery and heavy equipment, secured my practical ability to sculpt in various woods and metals.

Every artwork is built from scratch using some of the highest quality mediums and supports including Belgian linen, glass, metals and wood. Each painting is housed in an exquisite, hand-carved basswood frame finished in various types of leaf—some of which I craft myself. Every November, I open my studio doors to share these creations. You are warmly invited to visit, explore the work and share in the creative spirit.
