Downsizing has become a familiar topic around here-and for good reason. Whether you're thinking about moving in a year or "someday," the biggest mistake I see is waiting until the last minute and trying to do everything at once. That's not downsizing. That's chaos with boxes.

Here's the truth: downsizing works best when it's done early, intentionally, and without a looming moving truck parked in your driveway. Think of it as preparation, not punishment.

Start with the easy wins. When emotions are already running high, diving straight into old letters, heirlooms, or treasured recipes will overwhelm. Instead, begin with duplicates, broken items, or things you haven't touched in years. Momentum matters. Small, low-stakes decisions build confidence for the harder ones later. Next, keep what represents--not everything that reminds. You don't need every souvenir from every trip to remember a great vacation. One meaningful piece on display beats a dozen boxed memories gathering dust. Same sentiment, less clutter.

Photos, letters, and kids' artwork? Digitize them. You keep the memories without sacrificing square footage. Bonus: they're easy to share!

If something matters, use it. Repurpose it. A quilt becomes a throw. Costume jewelry becomes framed art. Keepsakes don't need to live in storage to be honored.

Create boundaries–a memory box works wonders. When it's full, something has to go. And when you're ready, pass items along with their stories attached.

Most importantly, let go without guilt. Memories live in you, not the stuff. Downsizing isn't about loss; it's about making room for what's next.

And if you're thinking, "This sounds good, but I don't know where to start," I can help. Let's get ahead of it now. Reach out anytime to 215-801-2019 or Kathleen@KathleenLayton.com.
