The Philadelphia Phillies received more recognition for their standout pitching staff with two pitchers named finalists for major end-of-season awards.
Cristopher Sánchez is a finalist for the National League Cy Young Award while closer Jhoan Duran earned a nomination for Reliever of the Year.
This is the third straight season that Sánchez will receive votes for the award, finishing 10th in 2024 before being the runner-up last season behind Pittsburgh’s Paul Skenes. This year, he joins the expected winner Jacob Misiorowski of the World Series winning Milwaukee Brewers and future Hall of Famer Chris Sale of the Atlanta Braves.
This year, Sánchez put together a memorable campaign, highlighted by his historic 50 ⅔ scoreless innings streak. It marked the longest in franchise history, the longest by a left-handed pitcher and the fifth-longest single-season streak since 1893.
The 29-year-old finished the year with a respectable 2.91 ERA in 33 starts while setting career-highs in innings pitched with 207.0 and 231 strikeouts. His 18 wins matched Boston’s Sonny Gray for the most in MLB.
If Sanchez were to win the award, he’d become the first Cy Young winner for the Phillies since Roy Halladay when the late Hall of Famer won in 2010.
Duran was one of the top closers in MLB this past season.
The flamethrowing righty notched a career-high 33 saves with a 1.82 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 84 strikeouts to earn his first All-Star nod. He finished fourth in saves among National League relievers.
The 28-year-old joins San Diego’s Mason Miller and Milwaukee’s Trevor Megill as the three finalists for the award.
Duran looks to win the award which was added last August after a BBWA membership vote to honor the best reliever in the sport.
The winners will be announced on Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. as part of an MLB Network special.
